Can't Keep Highlighting Tool On Word For Mac 2011

You may need to know how many words are in your Microsoft Word document for a school or work assignment or to meet publishing requirements for a blog post or other document. Microsoft Word counts the words as you type and displays this information in a simple form in the status bar at the bottom of the document window. For expanded statistics on character count, paragraphs, and other information, open the Word Count window.

Instructions in this article apply to Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010, Word for Office 365, and Word 2016 for Mac.

Fields in Word are bits of code that are placeholders for data that changes. For example, when you insert page numbers into the header or footer of a document, Word actually creates a field that inserts the correct page number on each page. There are a lot of built-in fields available in Word, such as the current date, the date a document was last saved, the file name, and the number of words. If I highlight a word/paragraph and type another word it doesn't delete the highlighted word/para. I'm forced to use the Delete button now. The Backspace button used to be my go to button- loved it.
