I'm using SNMP to poll switches for data. I'm trying to retrieve the MAC address table (sho mac address-table) to view what devices are connected to various ports but I seem to have encountered a problem.In all other posts, questions, and guides the general consensus is to use BRIDGE-MIB::dot1dTpFdbTable or another within that MIB. For whatever reason I cannot use this OID on our equipment.
Former Apple employee Gerard Allen shared some of his favorite tools during JAMF Software’s user conference. Based in Ireland, Allen built his career helping companies integrate Macs into their IT environments. He worked for Apple for eight years during the 1990s, then started providing technical support and training to businesses. He's a big fan of JAMF Software's Casper Suite. 'All the little bits and pieces I’d been bolting together, this answers it in one place. It's a single pane of glass. It makes everything come alive in a way that I'd been hacking things together to do for so many years. Overnight it revolutionized how I operated,' Allen said of Casper Suite, which he’s been using for a few years. 'But I can’t use it in insolation.'
Allen supplements Casper with many sysadmin tools and utilities, some of which have been in his arsenal for years. Here are 14 of his favorites.
- Probing a device: SNMP WALKs. In this example we're asking the snmpwalk tool to walk all OIDs starting from our base OID.1.3.6.1.4.1.318 (the fully qualified OID up to the vendor identification, which is 318 for APC). For this device I get a total of 308 OIDs returned. However, because all we have to judge the OIDs meaning by is the output.
- Verax SNMP agent simulator is a tool that can simulate multiple SNMPv1/v2c agents on a single host on standard 161 port through multi-netting. It allows IT personnel to build virtual, simulated networks of devices without purchasing any additional hardware, for instance for testing purposes.
